The famous Orchard Road will be rejuvenated under the government planning, which is going to enhance its green lifestyle destination. Orchard Road is well-known for its world-class shopping belt. In 2019, Urban Redevelopment Authority, Singapore Tourism Board, and National Parks Board (NParks) came together with the Land Transport Authority to unveil a two-pronged strategy to make Orchard Road “The Lifestyle Destination” and to “Bring Back the Orchard”. It’s to bring more vibrancy to Orchard Road and further improve consumers’ shopping experience. Under the Draft Master Plan 2019, The Orchard Road shopping belt was divided into four sub-precincts, namely Tanglin, Orchard, Somerset, and Dhoby Ghaut.
Tanglin’s identity as an arts and cultural neighbourhood will be strengthened. The conserved Tudor Court can house a greater diversity of uses, including arts and cultural offerings. The covered canal behind can be turned into an attractive courtyard space enlivened with public art and outdoor dining, making it a focal area for local residents and hotel guests.
At Orchard, vibrancy is the key to further improve consumers’ shopping experience, as Orchard is the retail haven of Singapore, boasting myriad shopping malls and retail outlets. Elevated link-bridges can make it easier to cross the junction of Orchard and Paterson Roads, and provide opportunities to take the picture-perfect shot of Orchard Road. The vacant State Land parcels at Sixth Avenue present opportunities for exciting mixed-use developments above the upcoming Thomson-East Coast Line Orchard Interchange MRT, which can also be connected to Orchard Road via bustling side streets.
Somerset, known as the youth hub, houses the newly-opened, Design Orchard, located at the intersection of Orchard Road and Cairnhill Road. It is the home to homegrown labels with a diverse offering of 61 local brands. The authorities will enhance the stakeholders to enhance the connectivity across buildings and introduce more lifestyle uses in this area.
Dhoby Ghaut, where many of the early activities of Orchard Road took place, is envisaged as a family-friendly lifestyle zone. Apart from being enhanced as a lifestyle destination, Orchard Road will also be a green corridor that connects to the Singapore Botanic Gardens and Fort Canning Park. Orchard Road is more than just a shopping street. for each of the sub-precincts, there are opportunities to introduce new retail concepts, lifestyle attractions and events to enhance the unique experience of each sub-precinct.
